Silicon Valley Conference on Advanced Semiconductor Lights Attracting Strong Pacific Rim Interest

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA - January 24, 2000.  The upcoming STRATEGIES IN LIGHT Conference on Business Opportunities in Advanced Light-Emitting Diodes (LEDs) is attracting especially strong interest from attendees headquartered in the Pacific Rim, where the majority of the LED industry is based. Over 20% of registrants to date are traveling from Taiwan, Japan, Hong Kong, and Malaysia to attend, and new registrations are pouring in from Asia daily.

A first-of-its-kind event, STRATEGIES IN LIGHT is attracting senior management from all major high-brightness (HB) and conventional LED manufacturers and an impressive number of key lighting designers. The conference will be held at the four-star Hyatt Regency Hotel at the San Francisco Airport February on 10 and 11.

STRATEGIES IN LIGHT REGISTRANTS (as of 1/20/00)

Business Type Registered Percent
Advanced lighting designers and users 23%
Semiconductor lighting (LED) makers 35%
LED substrates, chemicals, other suppliers to LED Companies 18%
E pitaxy and related capital equipment 10%
Analysts 9%
Other 5%

"Our registrants to date are confirming that this conference is especially timely and important to them. Manufacturers, systems integrators, and suppliers are moving to HB-LED technology at an unprecedented rate. Consequently, the state of the marketplace mandates very high level strategic planning. Alliances and rapid expansion are the new norm as the market moves very quickly into high-volume production," said John Day, President of Strategies Unlimited. "Traditional lightin g industry leaders such as General Electric, OSRAM/Sylvania, and Philips are making significant capital investment in solid-state HB-LED-based lighting."

HB-LEDs over the full color spectrum at truly high brightness levels are now available for a variety of new applications, including the replacement of the common white light bulb. Solid-state HB-LEDs are more efficient, more reliable, and have longer lifetimes than conventional lighting. According to Strategies Unlimited, the first large-volume use of HB LEDs has been in large outdoor displays, vehicle safety lighting, and traffic lights, where brightness and reliability are key. Over time, HB LEDs could replace ordinary home and office light bulbs, a $12 billion annual market. Strategies Unlimited, which is the industry's leading LED market research firm, forecasts that the high-brightness segment of the worldwide LED market, which approached $600 million in sales in 1999, will reach $1.2 billion by 2004.

"Interest in the conference has surged," said Day. "To meet the demand, we have expanded our meeting space, but space is limited, so we encourage those who want to attend to register soon."
