New Leadership Named as John Day Retires from Strategies Unlimited

July 25, 2002 - Mountain View, CA

Founder and Managing Director John Day has announced his decision to retire from Strategies Unlimited, effective July 31, 2002. Since founding Strategies Unlimited 23 years ago, Day has specialized in providing market research and strategic consulting to companies bringing emerging technologies to market.

"We are fortunate to have acquired Strategies Unlimited Research this past year and add it as a valuable asset to the PennWell Corp family of products. Along with KMI Research, acquired in July of 1999, we are able to offer our constituencies a broad range of technical and market research. John's long relationships with both his markets and his customers was one of the core reasons the Strategies Unlimited acquisition was so attractive to PennWell. John has left us with a tremendous tea m of research experts, and I look forward to his continued counsel over the coming years", says Dave Janoff, PennWell Senior Vice President and President of Strategies Unlimited and KMI Research.

Day formed Strategies Unlimited in 1979 after having served as Vice President and General Manager of the High-Technology Division of Gnostic Concepts, Inc., where he performed a broad spectrum of consulting services to the semiconductor, photovoltaic, energy, and chemical industries. Previously, he had held top-level management positions in the then-young semiconductor industry at American Microsystems, Siliconix, and Itek. The initial focus of Strategies Unlimited was on the photovoltaics a nd compound semiconductor materials markets. Over time the practice areas have grown to include optoelectronics, optical networking, and RF/wireless components and technologies.

Among Day's accomplishments was his service as Project Coordinator for the Optoelectronic Industry Development Association (OIDA) Market and Technology Roadmap Program from 1991-1995. He organized and directed over seventeen workshops and two national forums that helped guide the industry through a period of rapid expansion.

A graduate of both MIT and Stanford, Mr. Day directed a number of single-client custom strategic planning programs and provided counsel to Boards of Directors, senior management, financial institutions, and governments on strategies for managing high-technology enterprises. These assignments included technology assessment, product roadmaps, market development, industrial development, analyses of competition, and recommendations on investments, mergers and acquisitions, and joint ventures. He has testified three times before the Congress of the United States on technology development and trade matters.

Succeeding Day as Managing Director will be Peter Farmer, currently the Director of Optical Networking Practice for Strategies Unlimited. Mr. Farmer, who joined Strategies Unlimited in 1978, has 20 years of professional experience in the telecommunications industry, including strategic planning, product-line management, field marketing, and market research. His particular focus has been on optical switching and all-optical architectures, data services, wireless delivery of information. Farme r's past experience includes executive experience with two Silicon Valley startups. At Strategies Unlimited he has advised a number of early-stage companies on product and marketing strategy.

"John's shoes will be difficult to fill, but the task is made easier by how John has led this company for 23 years," said Farmer. "He has created a first-class team, and his personal standards for quality and integrity have formed the basis for our strong reputation. I look forward to building on his success and wish him the best in his retirement. We're hopeful that we can continue to tap into his knowledge from time to time and that he can participate in some of our future s tudies."
